In order to add the second floor we added a structural center volume and made it a feature point in the house.
In order to insure the space felt as open as possible we added the white oak staircase screen, embedding it in the floor and ceiling.
After the volume was complete a lightweight concrete was poured embedding the staircase slats into the floor. The floor was then finished with a micro-topping for the desired color effect.
Rather than removing the original wood fireplace we brought the exterior Venetian plaster look inside adding the steel and wood bench all while converting it to gas.
Embracing the original brick facade we added over 1,000 square feet of living space creating a truly modern home within the original footprint.
Additional square footage was added by cantilevering the 2nd floor. As the site provided ample off street parking we converted the original garage to a heated studio maintaining a garage door.
